Egil Törnqvist (19 December 1932, Uppsala - 9 March 2015, Amsterdam)

It is with great sadness and a deep sense of loss that we learn of the death of our highly-valued author Egil Törnqvist on March 9th, 2015 at the age of 83. He will be greatly missed.

Egil Törnqvist was professor emeritus of Scandinavian studies at the University of Amsterdam, author of Drama as Text and Performance and Strindberg on Drama and Theatre, and a leading Strindberg and Bergman scholar. In 2004, he received the renowned Strindberg Prize.

Egil Törnqvist had been working on a new book project these last few years in collaboration with Amsterdam University Press, called The Serious Game. Ingmar Bergman as Stage Director. We are proud to announce its publication in the Autumn of 2015.

The Serious Game. Ingmar Bergman as Stage Director byEgil Törnqvist

Though Ingmar Bergman became famous as a filmmaker, his roots—and, to some extent, his heart—was in the theater. He directed more than one hundred plays in his career, and The Serious Game takes a close look at fourteen productions he staged at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. Looking closely at the relationship between the verbal and the visual, this book gives even longtime Bergman fans a new understanding of his sensitivity to nuance, his versatility, and his dedication to craftsmanship.
